The Origin Of Modern MMA

Amongst the first generation of Gracies born in Brazil, Carlos and his brother Helio Gracie, were people of small physical structure. Upon learning Japanese Jiu-Jitsu from Count Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos and Helio studied the application of leverage, technique, proper weight distribution and the human body's bone structure mechanics, and how it would apply on stronger, resisting opponents. They modified and enhanced the Japanese version of Jiu-Jitsu according to their studies and created what's now called, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Matches with no time limit, rules or weight classes were put to place against masters of other Martial Arts to ensure the newly created system, was effective and realistic against anyone fully resisting, anytime, anywhere. For over 60 years, the Gracie Family tested its techniques against all comers, successfully showing the world that Gracie or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the single most effective Self-Defense system there is.

More recently, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and MMA was introduced in the USA by the Gracie Family in the early 90's with the creation of the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships). With wins in multiple events around the world against practitioners of all sizes and disciplines, the Gracie Family revolutionized the world of Martial Arts with its fighting style, techniques and strategies. Jiu-Jitsu is now studied by every MMA competitor in the world today.

Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

The application of Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in a fight strategically consists in take away your opponent's ability to win the fight and apply your own. When closing the distance, clinching and taking the fight to the ground your opponent's ability to strike, escape or inflict you damage are greatly reduced. Knowing what possible counter–attacks or escapes may be put to use by your opponents and immediately adjusting to them, is what will make the difference at the end. These reflexes and second nature reactions are rapidly reached by Jiu-Jitsu practitioners, since resistance training already begins at 3 or 4 months in our Beginner's Program. Only with intense drilling, repetition and constant study of the art, such second nature can be achieved.

Clinching and Staying Close

The longer you stand with someone, the higher are their chances of tagging you with an unwanted strike. And that may be the end of the fight. The stronger the opponent, the harder they'll hit. So, if you want to apply the fundamentals of Jiu-Jitsu and take the fight to the ground, you need to make sure to stand with someone just long enough to set up a clinch and close the distance. In such close range, strikes became limited to knees and elbows, which can be easily neutralized with proper technique and movement.

Cross Training

We do believe and recommend cross training, not only for the technical benefits that it will bring you, but also for all the other physical and mental attributes you'll get. For instance, learning to strike can facilitate on closing the distance and clinching; studying Wrestling and/or Judo will help sharpen your takedown skills and etc...

One thing that cannot be forgotten is that WE MUST HAVE A FOUNDATION, regardless of whatever fighting style we choose to follow. If everything goes wrong, we'll have to rely on our defensive instincts, and that's when the guard and other positions from your back will be of excellent use if you study Jiu-Jitsu with depth.

Crosley Gracie Jiu-Jitsu

With extensive experience in Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Judo and obviously, Jiu-Jitsu, in addition to his physical attributes, Professor Crosley Gracie developed an aggressive and effective fighting and teaching style that earned him the nickname “Hybrid Gracie” in Japan several years ago. Having trained with several members of the Gracie Family gave Crosley an unique mixture of styles that allowed him to create his own. These personal training experiences helped his game evolve from traditional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the highest Mixed Martial Arts events in the world.

In our MMA program, you will learn warm up drills, concepts such as: Striking, Striking to Takedowns, Counter- Attacks, Countering Takedowns, The Clinch, Top Position Over a Downed Opponent, The Guard, The Top Ground Game and more, incorporated by Professor Crosley from his own training and competition experiences.
