What does "Jiu-Jitsu" mean?

Jiu-Jitsu translates to "the gentle art" it is referred to as such because the art utilizes leverage and balance rather than force and strength. Also the finishing submissions are viewed as a more humane alternative to striking.

What is the difference between Classical or Japanese Jiu-Jitsu and Gracie or Brazilian Jiu -Jitsu?

There are numerous differences. The main one being BJJ focuses more on ground grappling while Classical Jiu-Jitsu places a greater emphasis on standing grappling and striking. All types of Jiu-Jitsu are based on submitting your opponent; however, BJJ is the only form of Jiu-Jitsu that heavenly emphasis on positional strategy and control before doing so. This strategy will allow you to be in a completely dominant position, safe and calm to apply a finishing hold. Another fundamental difference is that BJJ, students will have the chance to practice and drill moves while partner resists 100%.

I'm not in the best shape. Can I still take a Jiu-Jitsu Class?

Of course! In fact, our beginner classes are an excellent way to get into shape. Not only will you learn the essential skills of self-defense, but you will also focus on muscle strengthening and endurance, cardio, and flexibility.

What is the belt system in Jiu-Jitsu?

Belts in BJJ include white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown, and black. Each successive belt represents an increased mastery of the art.

This varies for each individual however it is usually between 8 and 15 years.

Is Jiu-Jitsu effective against other styles of martial arts?

In MMA (mixed martial arts) competitions, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu has consistently proved its supremacy. Evidence of this can be found in the videos Gracies in Action I & II, a documentary in which the Gracie Family took on and defeated all comers for over 70 years.

Is Jiu-Jitsu beneficial for women?

How are classes structured?

Class includes several plyometric exercises and movements to help improve conditioning, coordination, flexibility and strength. I have never done martial arts before and I feel a little apprehensive. How easy is it to get started?

Most people feel some anxiety about starting a martial arts program which is why our introductory program of 12 weeks was created. Individual attention is a feature in each and every class, allowing all students to progress quickly and confidently towards the more advanced programs. This system will make sure you familiarize yourself with the school, the instructors and of course to help you feel comfortable with the material you will be learning.

Do I have to enter competitions?

Competition is always completely optional. Our school has produced many local, national and international champions. However many of our clients simply enjoy the training and all its benefits without ever participating in any competition. An accomplished competitor himself, Professor Crosley Gracie understands the difference between training for a competition and the self defense aspect of Jiu-Jitsu. Our school provides a positive environment for students with great approach to personal excellence pursuit and realistic self defense.

I don't have a lot of time, what is the commitment required to progress at a normal pace?

60 minutes, 2 to 3 times a week will produce exceptional results. We want to make sure you don't have to give up all your free time to benefit from our programs. Individual lessons are always an excellent alternative to speed up your learning process, incase class schedule conflicts with work hours.

When do you offer classes?

We offer classes 6 days per week. In order to accommodate your hectic schedule, each of our programs run several times per week, allowing you to customize a training schedule that suits your needs. And besides our instructional program, we also provide “open mat” times for those who want to come in and work out on their own as well as private lessons, which can be virtually scheduled for any time of the day!

How old does my child have to be to start training?

We recommend that children start at 4 years old. However, since no two kids are the same, and there can be significant differences in coordination and maturity, we are willing to evaluate children younger than 4.

What is the difference between Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and other forms of martial arts for kids?

Jiu-Jitsu will teach your children that they don't need to learn how to punch and kick in order to control someone and protect themselves from bullying. Instead of learning moves through katas or prearranged set of movements carried out on a cooperative training partner, they will learn how to apply grappling techniques on a resisting training partner who's not cooperating and is counteracting with his own moves. Each time our class sizes increase, we accommodate with an increase in instructors per class as well. We attempt to maintain a 1 to 8/10 ratio of Instructor to kids.

My child is already very energetic. I'm afraid martial arts training will encourage aggression, is this true?

Training at our academy will provide an outlet for children in which to channel aggression and excess energy. Our children's programs focus on developing behavioral and attitudinal aspects inherent with martial arts such as respect, confidence, discipline and control. Through providing a fun and safe atmosphere for kids, we can foster a healthy environment in which they can learn and develop not only self-defense skills, but life skills as well.

Are there ever any tournaments in the area where my kids can compete in?

Absolutely! Even though competing is not a must, we indeed encourage children to do so, as it will help them develop focus, team spirit, hard work and will teach them how to deal with success and disappointment.

Teaching kids is not easy - what qualifications do your instructors have to teach my child?

Teaching kids is definitely not easy! But it is one of the most rewarding experiences in the world. All of our instructors have been certified to teach through the Official Gracie Jiu-Jitsu System. Professor Crosley has been training under his family since 8 years of age and can pass to his students the experience acquired over 20 years of training. Our goal is to provide an environment where the kids will improve their social, behavioral and self-defense skills.

Is the curriculum safe for my child?

The curriculum is very safe for your child. The attention to safety and the student's well being always comes first. Martial art training is a sport, just like baseball, soccer, football or basketball. Injuries will occur. Collisions will happen. Proper martial arts training include contact. If it doesn't, how can it possibly be called self-defense? We use the proper safety equipment, instructor supervision and rules in order to be sure your child is as safe as possible while learning a very real and practical self-defense system.

What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a form of kick boxing developed in Thailand. It is often called the art of eight weapons. Thai Kick boxers utilize feet, hands, knees and elbows! While many people study Muay Thai kickboxing for self-defense benefits, large numbers embrace the sport for fitness rather than its martial qualities. Training delivers excellent health benefits: greater strength, fat loss, increased endurance, increased quickness, tremendous flexibility.

I haven't really exercised in a long time. Is kick boxing too intense for me to start with?

One of the great things about kickboxing (if your doctor gives you the ok to start a regular exercise program) is that you start off at your own pace, gradually increasing the level of intensity as you get more fit.

What makes your Muay Thai program different from what is being offered at other facilities?

First of all, we teach authentic Muay Thai, not cardio kickboxing. There's a big difference! Our instructors have extensive training and competition background in Muay Thai kickboxing. Beware of illegitimate instructors and schools who advertise Muay Thai classes when their real background experience is Karate, Tae Kwon Do, etc. Our classes are designed so that beginners can set their own individual pace, and progressively increase their own level of intensity. Individual attention to technique execution is a feature in every class. After just a few classes you will understand why no other school's program can match what we offer.

Is there any contact in your Muay Thai classes?

Yes, there is contact in our regular Muay Thai classes. You will learn to hold pads and interact with students drilling combinations with your hands, feet, elbows and knees. But you don't have to participate in any sparring activity unless you choose to pursue some of our competitive programs or just want to do it for fun. Sparring is always completely optional.

Results are almost immediate depending on the frequency, intensity, and duration of your workouts. Our Instructors are there to guide and motivate you, but ultimately, the intensity level of your workout is up to you. Within the initial two weeks you can look for an increase in energy level, the next few weeks for a change in the way your clothes fit, and by the second month you may notice a difference on the scale. An appropriate diet will always increase results. Results may vary.

What's the average calorie loss per class?

This will vary according to how hard you want to push yourself. It can range anywhere from 400 to 700 calories per class (55 minutes)

What does the class include?

The class starts with 2 rounds of jumping rope, which will help you develop footwork and improve coordination, followed by 1 or 2 rounds of shadow boxing to improve your technique. The instructor will show various combinations to be worked on a bag or with partners. You will practice striking and holding the pads. A specific sparring session or calisthenics will conclude the class. Class benefits will vary according to your fitness and skill level.

Is Muay Thai Kickboxing good for self-defense?

Yes! Because, Muay Thai Kickboxing stresses basics, power and speed they are highly effective for self-defense. In our training we strike bags, mitts, Thai pads, and work with partners. This assures that the training is relevant to real life and is practical. However, if you are looking solely to improve your street self-defense skills, we highly recommend you to sign up for the Jiu-Jitsu program.

Are there any tournaments or competitions around the area in case I want to compete?

Yes, we have a competition team that competes 4, 5 times a year. This will require extra practice and approval from the Head Instructor.

I've never done any sports before. How often should I attend classes so I don't overdo it in the beginning?

If you have never done any sports before, we recommend you start off your training with 2 classes a week for the first few months. This will ensure your body gets used to the exercises and repetitions we practice throughout the class. Private lessons are also a great way to learn the fundamentals and easy you into the classes.

I'm not sure if I want to commit to a minimum of 12 months, what do you recommend?

Well, if you aren't sure if you'll like the sport, we recommend you to come by and watch a full class. The next step is to try out an intro lesson. Simply, fill out a waiver and pay a $20 intro class fee and you are ready to go. When you decide that Muay Thai is right for you, we'll gladly apply the intro class fee towards your membership.

Why do you require a 12 month agreement?

We want you to give us a chance to show you how many benefits you will get from Muay Thai class. One or 2 months of training won't provide new students the results in conditioning and technique that a full year will. The longer you train the more benefits you will witness. It will become something you can't live without!

What benefits will my teenager have from the Muay Thai classes offered here?

Since many of the techniques and drills are done with alternating partners, teens that are shy and lack self-confidence will develop social skills and make new friends while interacting with others. In our classes you'll find Police Officers, Nurses, Firemen, School Teachers, Moms & Dads and competitive athletes. All working towards their own goals.

Yes, we have new members every week and about 90% of them have never trained before, and they were nervous too. Once you try it you'll be hooked!!
